‘Skyfall,’ ‘Intouchables’ lead Germany’s record box office

Revenue rises 7.8% to reach nearly $1.3 billion

BERLIN — “Skyfall” and French hit “The Intouchables” topped the German box office in 2012 and helped propel theatrical revenue to record heights.

According to preliminary figures from Rentrak, German moviegoers spent €984.9 million ($1.3 billion) at the movies from Dec. 29, 2011, to Dec. 30, 2012 — up 7.8% on the previous year.

The figures do not include previews or alternative programming engagements such as increasingly popular theatrical broadcasts of opera and concerts, and official figures from the German Federal Film Board, which will be reported in February, are expected to exceed Rentrak’s numbers.

“Skyfall” led the B.O. with $82.13 million, followed by “Intouchables” ($81.55 million), “Ice Age: Continental Drift” ($67.63 million), “The Hobbit” ($60.13 million) and “Madagascar 3” ($39.53 million).

“The Hobbit” has remained at No. 1 since its Dec. 13 start, cuming $39 million. It garnered its biggest weekend box office — $16.97 million — between Dec. 27-30, its third weekend on release.

Theaters also saw 5% more moviegoers in 2012, with admissions reaching 126.9 million.
