He’s not just an accomplished world traveler, Richard Robbins revealed at Thursday’s L.A. preem of “Girl Rising.” He’s also an accomplished world shopper. The filmmaker traveled the globe to make the Documentary Group pic, which shows how education has lifted nine girls out of poverty. It’s narrated by several actresses, including Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
Capturing these girls’ stories was the filmmaker’s mission, but Robbins had a secondary charge: bring one doll from each country home to his 8-year-old daughter. It was an easy task, until he got to Cambodia and could find only Barbies. “And I was like, that’s not what I’m looking for!”
Robbins finally found his authentic doll. “I missed my daughter’s first day of first grade on that trip — so I had to get that doll,” he quipped.
