Shailene Woodley Debuts First ‘Divergent’ Trailer

Lionsgate planning March 21 release

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for “Divergent,” highlighting star Shailene Woodley’s initiation into the Dauntless faction.

Woodley and co-star Theo James introduced the footage during MTV’s Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday.

“Divergent” is set to be released next March 21.

The Neil Burger pic is an adaptation of the first novel of Veronica Roth’s trilogy about a post-apocalyptic Chicago. Vanessa Taylor wrote the screenplay.

Lionsgate has noted that the release date is the same slot used last year for the release of its mega-hit “The Hunger Games.”

Story centers on a society divided into five factions, each dedicated to a particular virtue — Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity and Erudite — with all 16-year-olds required on a particular day to select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives.

Awful trailer for what will very likely be an awful movie. Not surprised it’s coming from the studio that released “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight”. It’s very clear they’re trying to add different flavors to that awful powder they’ve been making. What do they all have in common: very cheap, direct-to-iTunes production value, lack of style and narrative focus, pop-psyche cliche overkill, and cringe-worthy dialogue. Why do these kind of movies make money?!?!

The hottest practitioners of sci-fi (Neill Blommakp, Rian Johnson, Guillermo Del Toro, Zack Snyder, and Duncan Jones among others) are all laughing their butts off right now.
