See-Saw takes rights to Brierley story

Sunstar on board for Oz, India-set story

SYDNEY — See-Saw Films, part of the producing team behind “The King’s Speech,” has acquired the rights to Saroo Brierley’s as-yet-unpublished autobiography.

Deal was made in conjunction with Sunstar Entertainment.

Brierley’s life story made worldwide news last year. After being accidentally separated from his Indian birth mother aged just five, he was raised on the Aussie island of Tasmania, after being found in Calcutta alone. He finally tracked down his family using just Google Earth and fractured childhood memories of the place he was born.

See-Saw said the story was “irresistible.”

“The moment we heard it, we knew it had all the elements that make for great cinema. There is perhaps no greater human drive than the desire to find out who we are and to know our mothers. This, along with the incredible contrast between our high-tech world and the streets of Calcutta, make for an unforgettable story,” said Emile Sherman and Iain Canning in a statement.

Brierley added: “I am humbled that my story is being made into a movie. and I know it is in great hands with Sunstar and See-Saw. I’m looking forward to working closely with the production team in my capacity as a consultant on the project.”

Brierley’s autobiography will be published by Penguin later this year.
