Scribe Jon Vitti Flocks to Sony’s ‘Angry Birds’

Industry veteran Catherine Winder also boards 3D toon as co-producer

Sony has tapped “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill” comedy writer Jon Vitti to pen a screenplay for the studio’s upcoming 3D toon based on the Angry Birds app from Rovio Entertainemnt.

Vet producer Catherine Winder also has boarded to produce alongside John Cohen (“Despicable Me”) and David Maisel (“Iron Man”), who will exec produce.

Pic has been slatted for release July 1, 2016.

“I’m very excited that Jon and Catherine have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise,” Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a statement. “I’m confident we are building the right team to deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.”

Vitti’s other writing credits include “The Office” and “The Larry Sanders Show.” He also co-wrote “The Simpsons Movie” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”

Winder, meanwhile, served as prexy of Vancouver-based Rainmaker Entertainment, where she oversaw set-up, production and development at LucasFilm Animation and served as senior VP of production at Twentieth Century Fox Animation.

Created in 2009, the Angry Birds mobile app remains the best-selling paid app of all time. It’s since become an entertainment, publishing and licensing phenomenon.
