Roman Polanski’s Racing Documentary Gets U.S. Distribution

'Weekend of a Champion' premiered at Cannes

Submarine Deluxe has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Frank Simon’s restored Roman Polanski documentary “Weekend of a Champion,” a look at world champion driver Jackie Stewart’s attempt to win the Monaco Grand Prix in 1971.

Polanski’s original documentary premiered at the 1972 Berlin Film Festival but was never released theatrically.

Simon’s version, which debuted at Cannes this year, includes footage of a 2011 conversation between Polanski and Stewart in which they discuss the sport, both past and present.

Polanski had spent a weekend with Stewart as he attempted to win the Monaco race and was given access to Stewart’s world for three days, both on the track and off.

“Weekend of a Champion” is presented by Brett Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment documentary arm Rat Documentary Films, which first acquired and restored the film.

Submarine will release the film in New York on Nov. 22 followed by a national rollout. It will also be released later on Netflix after its theatrical run.

The docu was shot after Polanski’s  “Rosemary’s Baby” in 1968.
