Australian Writers' Guild rewards non English-language features

BUSAN — Writer – director Kim Mordaunt won the best original screenplay prize at the Australian Writers Guild annual awards (AWGIEs) show yesterday with his film “The Rocket.”

Cate Shortland and Robin Mukherjee, writers of last year’s “Lore,” were winners of the best adapted screenplay.

The two films are both presented in languages other than English; “The Rocket,” (pictured) mostly in Lao, and “Lore” in German – and both were selected as Australia’s foreign-language Oscar contenders, in 2013 and 2012 respectively.

“Red Obsession,” a documentary about China’s growing role in the world wine business, written by David Roach and Warwick Ross, earned the AWGIE for best public broadcast documentary screenplay.

Best TV mini-series was “Underbelly.” Robert Connolly’s “Underground: The Julian Assange Story” was named as best telemovie adaptation.
