Steven Gaghan helms underworld drama

No stranger to the world of cops and criminals, Robert De Niro is set to star in Good Universe’s “Candy Store” that Stephen Gaghan is helming.

Jason Clarke and Omar Sy also star from a script that Gaghan co-wrote with Shannon Burke.

Pic is set in the Brooklyn underworld where a former covert ops agent (Clarke) discovers the organization he has been fighting all his career has set up shop in his backyard. He teams with a former cop (De Niro) to stop the threat that could endanger the city of New York.

Lionsgate will distribute in North America with Good Universe selling overseas rights at Cannes.

Allison Shearmur will produce along with Gaghan.

Lionsgate had been on the hunt to find a star to play the cop to help international sales potential, so De Niro should be an effective addition.

The CAA-repped De Niro was last seen in “Silver Linings Playbook,” which earned him an Oscar nomination.
