Relativity Reboots Jean-Claude Van Damme’s ‘Bloodsport’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Project will shoot in Australia and Rio de Janeiro with James McTeigue directing

Relativity is re-booting “Bloodsport,” Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1988 breakout film, with “V for Vendetta” director James McTeigue directing.

Relativity is producing with Edward R. Pressman, Chris Brown, Alberto Lensi, Australia-based Pictures in Paradise and Trans-American Films Intl. The film, which has not been cast, will explore the life of 21st century mercenaries as they collide with the underground world of Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting.

The script, written by “Taken” scribe Robert Mark Kamen and based on a story developed by Kamen and Phillip Noyce, will be rewritten by Craig Rosenberg under McTeigue’s supervision.

Relativity will distribute domestically and handle foreign distribution through its output partners. “Bloodsport” will be shot in Australia and Brazil during the first quarter.

McTeigue’s credits include “Ninja Assassin,” “The Raven” and the upcoming “The Survivor.”

Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and president Tucker Tooley will exec produce along with Jon Katz, Brett Thornquest, Daniel Bernhardt, Heidi Eckes-Chantre, Jeremy Thomas and Mark DiSalle. Richard Potter and Daniel Herther from Relativity are overseeing the project.

Pressman, whose credits include “Wall Street” and “The Crow,” is already partnered with Relativity on a reinvention of “The Crow” with Javier Gutierrez directing. He’s also working on the Joe Paterno biopic “Happy Valley,” to be directed by Brian De Palma and to star Al Pacino.

The original “Bloodsport” was shot for $1.1 million and grossed $11 million domestically.
