Richard Branca to Exit Sony Pictures Post-Production

Richard Branca

Sound expert led mixers to five Oscars

Richard Branca, Sony Pictures’ executive VP, post-production services, will leave the studio this month after more than 20 years on the lot.

Branca oversees a range of services, including sound re-recording, projection,  sound & video transfer, and DVD audio restoration and mastering studios. But his pride and joy has been the sound department, which he oversees with Tom McCarthy. Branca oversaw pictures that earned sound mixers 17 Oscar nominations and five Academy Awards. He has not disclosed his plans.

His departure, coupled with the retirement of Sony Pictures Studios president Gary Martin, marks a changing of the guard in the leadership of Sony’s on-lot post services.

McCarthy, who also has the title exec VP, post-production services, will take over supervision of the entire sound department, reporting to Randy Lake, exec VP and general manager, Sony Pictures Digital Productions. Lake oversees Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Colorworks and the sound department. All post-production services were moved under SPDP and its president, Bob Osher, earlier this year.

Boston native Branca started his career in 1980 in the sound department at MGM. After stints at Lorimar, Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros., he joined Sony Pictures in 1990 as director of sound, video and projection.

Martin said in a statement: “It has been a privilege to work with Richard over the years. Together we built one of the best sound departments in the industry, and I join with the management at Sony Pictures Studios in wishing him the very best in his future endeavors.”

  1. Randy Lee says:

    Dear Richard,
We have always been appreciative of your interest and actions in introducing Marshall to Sony when nearly 10 years ago,he travelled from Norwich University to California .To come to LA was a big adventure after completing his degree, and for parents to live in Canada, and not know anyone to connect him with was a concern for us.
When Marshall told us about you and your family and also Mike R’s efforts to get him integrated into
his job and living situation….it was an
extreme relief to us as parents.
So for that we again want to thank you….and as you make this change in your life we want to wish you tremendous success in the future and may it be even more rewarding than your time at Sony as you deserve the very best.

    Best regards’
    David and Randy Lee.
