‘Pompeii’ rises in Toronto

Cinespace Studios to host Paul W.S. Anderson's pic

Helmer Paul W.S. Anderson will shoot “Pompeii” at Toronto’s Cinespace Film Studios, it was confirmed Thursday.

In November Variety reported that “Game of Thrones” thesp Kit Harington was in negotiations to star as the slave of a shipping tycoon in the days leading up to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

The German-Canadian co-production will involve significant construction of ancient Roman architecture and visual effects. Live action scenes will be captured in native 3-D.

“Pompeii” is produced by Anderson and Jeremy Bolt through their Impact Pictures, along with Robert Kulzer and Martin Moszkowicz of Germany’s Constantin Film and Don Carmody of Canada’s Don Carmody Pictures. Lionsgate-Summit is handling U.S. distribution.

The German-Canadian team also chose Cinespace for “Resident Evil: Retribution” and, most recently, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.”

“Pompeii” is slated to start lensing in April.
