‘Pi’s’ Sharma chases BAFTA Rising Star

Temple, Olsen, Vikander, Riseborough among noms

LONDON — “Life of Pi” star Suraj Sharma will compete with actresses Elizabeth Olsen (“Red Lights”), Andrea Riseborough (“Oblivion”), Juno Temple (“The Dark Knight Rises”) and Alicia Vikander “(Anna Karenina”) for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ EE Rising Star award, it was announced Monday.

The honor, decided by public vote, recognizes up-and-coming talent. Previous recipients include Shia LaBeouf, Kristen Stewart and Tom Hardy.

“Martha Marcy May Marlene” star Elizabeth Olsen most recently appeared in “Red Lights” alongside Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro, and has recently finished lensing Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake.

Riseborough won the actress award at the British Independent Film Awards for James Marsh’s “Shadow Dancer.” She appears opposite Tom Cruise in “Oblivion.”

Temple was seen in William Friedkin’s “Killer Joe” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” and recently finished lensing “Maleficent” with Angelina Jolie.

Swedish actress Vikander starred alongside Keira Knightley in “Anna Karenina” and Mads Mikkelsen in Danish film “A Royal Affair.”

“This year the quality of emerging acting talent has been just incredible and the jury had a very tough job selecting the short list,” said Pippa Harris, deputy chair of BAFTA’s film committee and chair of the jury that selected the nominees. The jury also included actor Benedict Cumberbatch, helmer Kevin Macdonald, casting director Nina Gold and film critic Mark Kermode.

The winner will be announced at the BAFTA Film Awards on Feb. 10.

Full nominees for the film awards will be announced Wednesday.
