Phares et Balises, Babylone plan ‘Dogs’ adaptation

Leonardo Padura's bestseller headed to bigscreen in English

Gaul’s Compagnie des Phares et Balises and Babylone Prods. have acquired rights to Cuban Leonardo Padura’s bestseller “The Man Who Loved Dogs” and plan an English-language bigscreen adaptation.

Pic is budgeted at €20 million ($27 millon). A director will be attached by Cannes, Compagnie des Phares et Balises’ Jean Labib said at Berlin.

The novel will be published in the U.S. in August and in the U.K. at the end of year. It has already come out across much of Europe. Padura’s novel is framed by a chance encounter in 1977 Cuba, then flashes back to the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and a young Catalan, Ramon Mercader, chosen by his mother and the Communist Party to assassinate Trotsky, then living in exile in Mexico.

Labib and Babylone’s Philippe Maynial plan to shoot in September 2014 in Cuba, Mexico, France and Germany, making “Dogs” a French-German-U.K.-Mexican co-production, Maynial said.

Specializing in the production of upscale TV dramas, largely for pubcaster France Televisions, Compagnie des Phares et Belises scored a hit with historical detective series “Nicholas Le Floch,” now in its fifth season.
