Other Angle Racks Up Cannes Sales (EXCLUSIVE)

Sales company takes charge of 'Babysitting'

Paris-based sales agent Other Angle is celebrating its fifth birthday at Cannes with a flurry of deals across its slate, and a pickup.

“The Big Bad Wolf,” a French comedy starring Benoit Poelvoorde (“Coco Before Chanel”), Kad Merad (“Welcome to the Sticks”) and Charlotte Le Bon (“Yves Saint Laurent”) sold to Canada (Christal), Switzerland (Frenetic) and Benelux (Alternative). Deals for Germany, Russia, Spain and Italy are closing.

Meanwhile, helmer Nick Quinn’s laffer “Family Matters” sold to Spain’s Savor, Benelux’s Elysee, Switzerland’s JMH and Scandinavia’s Another World. A German buyer is in negotiations.

“Although it’s been said that mainstream comedies don’t travel well, we have become experts at selling them,” said Other Angle topper Olivier Albou. Case in point: “On the Other Side of the Tracks,” a buddy cop comedy toplining “Intouchables” star Omar Sy and Laurent Lafitte (“Little White Lies”), sold to over 40 territories, including the U.S. where The Weinstein Co. picked it up. It currently ranks as France’s top film export for 2013 having racked up over $10 million outside the country.

At Cannes, Other Angle started pre-sales on Berenice Bejo starrer “The Last Diamond,” a thriller romance helmed by Eric Barbier, and Michel Spinosa’s “His Wife,” starring real-life couple Yvan Attal and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Shingle is finalizing deals on “The Last Diamond” for Benelux, Switzerland, Germany, Russia and Turkey.

It has also nabbed international sales rights to €5 million ($6.5 million) “Babysitting,” a laffer starring Gerard Jugnot and Clotilde Courau. It’s directed by Philippe Lacheau and Nicolas Benhamou (“Porn in the Hood”), and produced by Axel Films (“Moebius”) and Madame Films (“JCVD”).

Pic turns on an employee who is asked by his boss to babysit his out-of-control teenage son.

Pic will start shooting on June 25. Universal Pictures Intl. will release the film in France in summer 2014.
