The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences unveiled seven semi-finalists in the makeup and hairstyling category, with the films competing for three nomination slots.
The contenders are
“Dallas Buyers Club”
“The Great Gatsby”
“Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters”
“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”
“Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa”
“The Lone Ranger”
This is one of the few Oscar categories with three nominees. On Jan. 11, members of the Academy’s makeup artists and hairstylists branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three for final Oscar consideration.
Nominees will be unveiled Jan. 16, with awards to be presented March 2 in ceremonies at the Dolby Theater, and broadcast live by ABC.
The Academy launched the makeup category in 1981, with hairstyling added as an optional addition to the prize in 1993, if the hair “contributed greatly to the appearance and effect of the characters.”
The Acad changed the category to the current title for last year’s films, when Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell won for Universal’s “Les Miserables.”
