TOKYO — “One Piece Film Z,” a toonpic about a rambunctious boy pirate captain and his rakish crew, has earned $60 million in three weeks in Japan, a record for distrib Toei.
The pic, which is based on Eiichiro Oda’s popular kiddy comic, has pulled in 4.4 million admissions, mostly from the toon’s core young male fans and their families.
The previous and 11th pic in the series, “One Piece Strong World,” finished with $55 million in 2009.
The previous B.O. record holder for Toei, which has been in business since 1950, was the 2005 WWII sea epic “Yamato,” which ended its first run with $58 million.
