‘Northwest’ goes to France, U.K., Benelux

Film is screening at Berlin's European Film Market

TrustNordisk has sold Michael Noer’s drama “Northwest” to Bac Films Distribution in France, Arrow Films in the U.K. and Wild Bunch for Benelux.

The film, which is screening at Berlin’s European Film Market, world preemed at the Rotterdam film fest, and was also shown at Gothenburg film fest, where it competed for the Dragon Award for Nordic film, and won the international critics’ FIPRESCI award.

Set in Copenhagen, the film follows two brother — played by non-pro real-life siblings Gustav and Oscar Dyekjaer Giese — as they explore the criminal netherworld of the city.

” ‘Northwest’ offers a compelling portrait of a young man whose moral compass is skewed but not broken. The pic manages this trick thanks to Noer’s documentarian eye and respect for character, bringing a Dardennes-like sensitivity to working-class teenage male anxiety,” wrote Jay Weissberg in his review for Variety.

Noer’s first feature film was prison drama “R” in 2010, co-directed by Tobias Lindholm. Before that he worked as a docu director. “Northwest” is his soph feature.

The film was written by Noer and Rasmus Heisterberg, whose credits include “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “A Royal Affair.” The latter pic won a Silver Bear at Berlin for screenplay and is nommed for the foreign-language film Oscar.

“Northwest” was produced by Tomas Radoor and Rene Ezra, who previously produced Lindholm’s “A Hijacking.” “Northwest’s” exec producers are Henrik Zein, Lena Haugaard and Thomas Heinesen from Nordisk Film Production. It was supported by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation and the Danish Film Institute. The budget was Euros 2.1 million ($2.81 million).

International sales are handled by TrustNordisk, which is also screening Roger Gual’s “Tasting Menu” and Annette K. Olesen’s “The Shooter” at the EFM.
