‘Nobody Owns Me’ Smashes Swedish B.O.

Pic has grossed an estimated $2 million since its Nov. 8 bow

Kjell-Ake Andersson’s ’70s-set working-class drama “Nobody Owns Me” has smashed the Swedish B.O., grossing an estimated $2 million since its Nov. 8 opening.

Set in an industrial town in Sweden, pic toplines Mikael Persbrandt as a working-class single father whose intense relationship with his daughter is put to test as he sinks deeper and deeper into alcoholism.

Pia Gradvall penned the script based on “Mir Ager Ingena,” Asa Linderborg’s award-winning novel. Francy Suntinger  at Filmlance Intl. produced.

Svensk reps international sales.

Persbrandt, who stars in “Nobody” opposite Ping Mon H. Wallen and Saga Samuelsson, is one of Sweden’s best-known thesps. He’s starred in both local and international pics, including Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning “In a Better World” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

Although Hollywood movies largely dominate the Swedish box office, last year saw local pics nabbing a healthy 22% market share, while the global B.O. hit with a 1.82 billion Swedish krona ($28 million) gross.

This year’s box office is topped by Per Fly’s “Waltz With Monica,” a well-polished, 1950’s-set biopic of Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund, which snatched up $6.7 million. “Monica,” also repped by Svensk Filmindustri, will play at Marrakech Film Festival as part of a focus on Scandinavian cinema.
