New Lincoln Center input spurs auteur-driven lineup

New York Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2013

Regis Roinsard’s”Populaire,” Francois Ozon’s “In the House” and Alice Winocour’s “Augustine” are among the titles set to play at the 18th New York Rendez-Vous With French Cinema, a festival jointly organized by Gallic promotion org Unifrance and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Under the direction of Robert Koehler, the new Lincoln Center Film Society programmer, the Rendez-Vous lineup seems decisively more auteur-driven than in previous years.

The 10-day celebration will bow with Roinsard’s feature debut “Populaire,” the story of a young woman (Deborah Francois) who becomes unexpectedely famous thanks to her extraordinary typing skills. The Weinstein Co. will release the pic.

Other skedded directorial debuts include “Augustine,” a drama centering on the unusual relationship between a pioneering 19th century French neurologist and his star patient; and Helena Klotz’s impressionistic “The Atomic Age,” the journey of two male friends embarking on a night out in Paris. “Augustine” and “Age” will be released in the U.S. by Music Box and TLA Releasing, respectively.

Besides “In the House,” a Cohen Media Group release, fest will also spotlight the latest films from other French helmers, notably Patrice Leconte’s toon “The Suicide Shop,” Raymond Depardon and Claudine Nougaret’s docu “Journal de France” and the late Claude Miller’s “Therese Desqueyroux.”

Fresh off Berlinale bows, Guillaume Nicloux’s “The Nun,” an adaptation of Denis Diderot’s classic novel, and Nicolas Philibert’s docu “La Maison de la Radio,” are also set to unspool.

For the second year, select titles from the Rendez-Vous lineup will screen via Emerging Pictures’ network of digital theaters across 40 cities simultaneously with their Lincoln Center showings.
