New Horizons Fest Jury Names ‘Celestial Wives’ Winner

Audience award goes to Wasilewski's 'Floating Skyscrapers'

The jury of the New Horizons film festival has named “Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari” (pictured) by Russian helmer Alexey Fedorchenko the winner of its 13-film international competition July 28.

Jury president Bela Tarr half-announced the winner, handing the mic over to fellow juror, Polish director Joanna Kos-Krauze, to finish the unveiling.

The Audience award went to “Floating Skyscrapers” from Polish helmer Tomasz Wasilewski. Gay coming out drama nabbed the East of the West award at the recent Karlovy Vary festival.

Another Polish film that deals with themes of homosexuality in this conservative country, “In the Name of” by Malgoska Szumowska, making its Polish preem, closed fest July 27. That film won the Teddy prize at the 2013 Berlinale.

Fest is Poland’s biggest, drawing some 130,000 filmgoers.
