eOne handling U.K., U.S. releases

Entertainment One has released the first trailer for “Diana,” the Princess Diana movie starring Naomi Watts.

The trailer starts the words “An Icon” and “Adored by Millions” before following with lightbulbs flashing and red carpets. Watts’ face isn’t seen until she turns around and smiles modestly, much like the late princess.

eOne acquired U.S rights at Cannes from Embankment Films and Ecosse Films. It plans to release “Diana,” — which focuses on the last two years of her life — late this year and is also planning major releases in the U.K., Canada and Spain.

The film is directed by “Downfall” helmer Oliver Hirschbiegel and explores Princess Diana’s relationship with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan, portrayed by Naveen Andrews (“Lost”).

  1. I’ve always been intrigue by the coincidence in the premature death of Princess Diana and the erstwhile tragic demise of Princess Grace of Monaco. Both ladies of royalty died as the result of an automobile accident — and both were deceased just after accepting the offer to appear in a motion picture: Princess Grace in Alfred Hitchcock’s MARNIE, and Princess Diana in Kevin Costner’s THE BODYGUARD sequel. You can’t make this stuff up and yet is reads like a scriptwriter’s imagination.
