MK2 picks up ‘Hotel,’ ‘Gerontophilia’

Company to preem 'Nuts' at Paris Rendez-Vous

PARIS

In the run-up to the Berlin Film Festival and market, Nathanael Karmitz’s MK2 has acquired Swedish up-and-comer Lisa Langseth’s “Hotel,” toplining “A Royal Affair” star Alicia Vikander, and Canuck helmer Bruce LaBruce’s “Gerontophilia” for French distribution and international sales.

In “Hotel” Vikander plays a young woman whose ideal life suddenly collapses. She starts going to group therapy, whose members decide to move to a place where they aren’t known to reboot their lives. Sweden’s B-reel films is producing; Tri Art Film will release the pic in Sweden.

Langseth’s feature debut “Beloved,” which also toplined Vikander, nabbed the Flash Forward nod at Pusan.

An edgy comedy with heart, “Gerontophilia” turns on an 18-year-old man who has an odd fixation with the elderly. He lands a summer job at an assisted living facility where he develops a strong bond with a patient.

Pic is a departure for genre-film specialist LaBruce. His last film, “L.A. Zombie,” competed at Locarno.

“Gerontophilia” is produced by Canuck’s New Real Films and 1976 Prods. Filmoption Intl. will distribute the pic in Canada.

As previously reported, MK2 is also re-teaming with Xavier Dolan on his psychological thriller “Tom at the Farm,” the Quebecois helmer’s follow-up to Un Certain Regard-player “Laurence Anyways.” MK2 is co-producing with Canada’s Mifilifilms and will distribute the pic in France and reps it in international markets.

MK2’s international sales team will unveil footage of the three films at Berlin.

The mini-major is set to premiere “Nuts,” a romantic comedy starring Eric Elmosnino (“Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life”), at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous mart, which kicks off on Tuesday in Paris.

Produced by Tonie Marshall’s Tabo Tabo Films and helmed by first-timer Yann Coridian, “Nuts” turns on a man who checks out of a mental institution with one goal in mind: to win back the love of his life.
