Relativity to Produce Fantasy-Adventure Pic

Relativity Media has tapped Mikael Hafstrom to direct an adaptation of fantasy-adventure “Tunnels” as potential franchise starter.

Mark Canton, Neil Canton and Danny Davids are producing with Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh. Relativity president Tucker Tooley is exec producing with Kelly Dennis and Atmosphere’s David Hopwood co-producing.

Andrew Lobel is scripting, based on the adapted screenplay written by Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist.

“Tunnels” is the first installment of a series from Scholastic/Chicken House by authors Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams, which has sold over a million copies. The authors have completed five sequels with the sixth and final “Tunnels,” to be published in the U.S. in the fall.

Relativity said Chicken House’s Barry Cunningham discovered the property.

“Tunnels” is set beneath the streets of London with two teenage boys discovering an underground world where a secret civilization has been desperately waiting for a hero to save them all.

Mark Canton said the series has elements of Indiana Jones and Narnia franchises, and noted that he recently partnered with Hafstrom on “The Tomb.”

Relativity’s Jason Barhydt will oversee the project for the studio.

Hafstrom is represented by WME. Lobel is represented by WME and Madhouse Entertainment.
