Michael Fukushima Tapped as Executive Producer of NFB’s English Animation Studio

The National Film Board of Canada has named Michael Fukushima the new executive producer of its renowned English program animation studio.

A filmmaker since 1984, Fukushima made his award-winning animated doc “Minoru: Memory of Exile” through the NFB.

Since joining the Montreal-headquartered studio as an in-house producer in 1997, Fukushima has spearheaded the creation of the NFB’s emerging filmmaker program Hothouse, and devoted significant effort to developing initiatives to bring edgier animation to wider audiences via interactive and mobile platforms.

“I have high regard for Michael’s considerable experience, his expert reflections on our animation history and his thoughtful, progressive ideas for the future,” said NFB English program director general Ravida Din. “I believe his leadership will advance the NFB’s profile as a global leader in animation.”

Fukushima’s most recent credits as an NFB producer include Patrick Doyon’s Oscar-nominated “Sunday/Dimanche”, as well as Claire Blanchet’s stereoscopic 3D film “The End of Pinky” and Bruce Alcock’s “Impromptu,” both of which world preemed at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

The recent Toronto fest also screened Oscar-winning “Ryan” director Chris Landreth’s S3D film “Subconscious Password” and Theodore Ushev “Gloria Victoria”; both NFB-produced animated films received major awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this year.

The NFB produces animation at its studios in Montreal and across Canada, as well as via international co-productions with leading auteur animators. Since the studio began producing animation in 1941, NFB animated films have garnered numerous Oscar noms and awards.
