Mexican B.O. up 9% in 2012

Top local pic was 'Colosio: The Assassination'

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s box office jumped 9.4% to $841 million in 2012, powered by Hollywood blockbusters, which filled the top 10, according to national film office Canacine.

“Avengers” was the highest earner at $65.1 million, followed by “Ice Age 4” at $48.7 million and “The Dark Knight Rises” at $33.1 million. While eight homegrown films made more than $2 million, local fare lacked a toon blockbuster like 2011’s “Top Cat,” which nabbed just over $9 million.

Taking the top spot for Mexican films was “Colosio: El asesinato” (Colosio: The Assassination), Carlos Bolado’s no-holds-barred recreation of the murder of 1994 presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio, with $4.45 million.

Coming in second was “Cristiada,” an account of Mexico’s bloody Cristero War in the 1920s, directed by Dean Wright. The film underperformed, making only $4.26 million, well below its estimated budget of $10 million to $12 million.

In third with $3.67 million was “De Panzazo,” Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Loret de Mola’s doc exposé on Mexico’s broken education system. It took advantage of distribution support from exhib Cinepolis and strong word-of-mouth.

Docs have been making headway in Mexico thanks in large part to support from the Ambulante Documentary Film Festival, set up by thesps Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal and producer Pablo Cruz, the Canana Films team. The next edition begins in Mexico City in February and tours through May.
