Magnolia Takes North America On 'Good

Documentary screened at South by Southwest

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to Ryan White’s documentary “Good Ol’ Freda,” which centers on t Freda Kelly, The Beatles’ lifelong secretary.

“Freda” is produced by Kathy McCabe, White and Jessica Lawson. Movie had its U.S. premiere at South by Southwest last month.

Kelly was a Liverpudlian teenager when she was asked to work for the band and witnessed the advances, setbacks, breakthroughs and challenges of The Beatles. The doc is touted as the first to tell her story and is one of few films with the support of the living Beatles and featuring original Beatles music.

Magnolia will release the film theatrically later this year.

Peter Debruge wrote in his Variety review: “Beginning with a rare Beatles Christmas recording (in which a shout-out by the band gives the docu its title) and featuring four of the band’s signature tunes, this demure artifact was intended for her grandson, but will mean more to those of Kelly’s generation.”

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s Dori Begley with Josh Braun of Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.
