Lithuania, Estonia Go it Alone Within European Film Promotion

Countries to be repped by Lithuanian Film Center and Estonian Film Institute

LONDON — Lithuania and Estonia have become individual members of European Film Promotion, an org that seeks to boost the profile of European cinema around the world.

The countries, which will be repped within EFP by the Lithuanian Film Center and the Estonian Film Institute, were previously repped by the umbrella organization Baltic Films.

EFP decided at its recent general assembly confab that every country should be free to become an individual member of the org, so they had the opportunity to promote their films and talent independently.

The EFP network, which is financially supported by its members and the MEDIA Program of the European Union, will consist of 35 member orgs representing 34 countries.

“We very much appreciate this decision relating to the cultural diversity of EFP,” said Renate Rose, managing director at EFP.

“Our network lives from the exchange of know-how and inspiration from various countries. Moreover, we offer platforms to promote the variety of talent and films under one banner.

“In this way, Lithuania and Estonia will have the chance for more visibility in the future.”

The main duties of the EFI are funding and promoting Estonian films, and supporting the training of local filmmakers. It reps the country at film festivals and markets, and within international orgs.

Among the films it has supported are Zaza Urushadze’s “Tangerines,” Ilmar Raag’s “Kertu” and Veiko Ounpuu’s “Free Range,” which reps the country at the Oscars.

The LFC provides funding for film development, production, distribution, promotion and education projects, and reps Lithuanian pics at festivals and markets.

Recent Lithuanian films include sci-fi romance Kristina Buozyte’s “Vanishing Waves,” Ignas Jonynas’ “The Gambler” and Giedre Beinoriute’s “Conversations on Serious Topics” (pictured), which is the country’s Oscar submission.

The EFI will be repped within EFP by Tristan Priimagi, head of international relations, and the LFC will be repped by Liana Ruokyte-Jonsson, head of the department for film promotion, information and heritage.
