Supernatural thriller set with Blum, McCormick

Lionsgate is developing Vatican supernatural thriller “White Smoke” with horror film titan Jason Blum and Kevin McCormick on board to produce.

The studio has acquired a pitch from Jeff Richard and Mark Bianculli, who are writing the script about a series of bizarre and haunting occurrences that grip the Vatican. A renowned neuroscientist is summoned by the inner circle of cardinals to find a logical explanation.

Blum (pictured) is producing through his Blumhouse Productions shingle, home to the “Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious” and “Purge” franchises. “Insidious Chapter 2″ has performed strongly with $70 million in its first 19 days at the U.S. box office.

McCormick is producing via his Langley Park banner. Recent credits include “Gangster Squad” and “Arthur.”

Matt Kaplan, a producer, brought the project to Blumhouse. Aaron Schmidt will be overseeing for Langley Park.

Lionsgate has a long tradition in releasing titles in the horror and supernatural genres with the “Saw” franchise, “Sinister,” “The Possession” and “The Cabin in the Woods.”

Richard and Bianculli are repped by WME and managed by Rosalie Swedlin at Anonymous.
