Toronto: Holocaust Doc ‘Last Of The Unjust’ Gets North American Distribution

Film centers on Theresienstadt camp

Cohen Media Group has acquired North American distribution “The Last of the Unjust” from “Shoah” director Claude Lanzmann.

CMG Chairman and CEO Charles S. Cohen announced the deal at the Toronto International Film Festival two days after “Unjust’s” premiere. The film, which is also an official selection at the upcoming New York Film Festival, will be released theatrically by the end of the year to qualify for Academy Award consideration. A traditional theatrical release will follow in 2014.

“Unjust” centers on  the Theresienstadt concentration camp, located in what is now the Czech Republic, where tens of thousands died and many more were held before being sent to their deaths at Treblinka, Auschwitz and other camps. The central figure is Benjamin Murmelstein, the last president of the Theresienstadt Jewish Council, who was forced to have daily negotiations with Nazi official Adolf Eichmann.

Lanzmann had originally intended to include this footage in 1985’s “Shoah.”
