Kormakur’s ‘2 Guns’ to Open Locarno Fest

Docu 'On the Way to School' to close Swiss event

ROME — The 66th Locarno Film Festival will open with the international launch of Baltasar Kormakur’s buddy cop actioner “2 Guns,” unspooling August 7 on the fest’s 8,000-seat outdoor Piazza Grande venue with the Icelandic helmer in tow.

Kormakur is a Locarno aficionado, having screened his first work, Icelandic comedy “101 Reykjavic,” in 2000 at the Swiss fest dedicated to indie pics and quality cinema. Helmer has since become known in Hollywood for several pics including hit thriller “Contraband.”

“2 Guns,” which toplines Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg and Paula Patton, will open stateside via Universal on Aug. 2. Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling most international territories on the big-budget adaptation of Steven Grant’s graphic novel.

The Locarno closer will be Gallic docu “On the Way to School,” helmed by Pascal Plisson, also getting a Locarno international launch.

Pic about four kids overcoming obstacles to make their way from home to the classroom in four different corners of the world is sold internationally by Wild Bunch. “School” will unspool on the Piazza Grande on August 17.

Piazza Grande pics will compete for the Prix du public UBS audience award and the Variety Piazza Grande Award, given by Variety critics to the best fest title unspooling on Europe’s largest open-air venue combining artistic excellence and commercial potential.

The complete Locarno lineup will be announced on July 18.
