Music Box takes rights to Mads Mikkelsen starrer

Music Box has picked up North American rights to Mads Mikkelsen starrer “Michael Kohlhaas,” which unspools in Cannes competition May 24.

Adapted from Heinrich von Kleist’s 1811 novel, “Kohlhaas” is directed by Arnaud des Pallieres. It’s produced by Films du Losange (Amour) and Les Films d’Ici (Waltz With Bashir).

Music Box plans a theatrical rollout in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Les Films du Losange reps the film internationally and will release it in France.

The 16th century-set film follows a horse merchant (Mikkelsen) who raises an army after suffering an injustice at the hands of a young baron.

“It’s rare to see such a smart period action drama and one that deals with themes that still resonate,” said Music Box managing director Edward Arentz. “It also doesn’t hurt to have such a compelling lead in Mads Mikkelsen.”

Deal was negotiated by Music Box’s James Brown and Films du Losange’s Agathe Valentin.
