Kino Lorber Takes U.S. For Ricky Jay Documentary

Kino Lorber Takes U.S. Ricky Jay

Pic will open April 17 at Film Forum before national release

Kino Lorber has acquired U.S. rights to the documentary “Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay,” from directors Molly Bernstein and Alan Edelstein.

The film debuted at last year’s New York Film Festival. Kino Lorber will release “Deceptive Practice” at New York’s Film Forum on April 17, followed by a national release.

The film is told largely in Jay’s voice and traces his career from his early apprenticeship, beginning at age 4, with his grandfather Max Katz. Pic includes performance footage from his one-man shows and TV appearances and also includes friends and collaborators such as Steve Martin and David Mamet.

Variety gave the pic a positive review, labeling it “well structured and dynamically edited.”

Jay said, “I’m making a concerted effort not to escape from the frames of the film before it is shown.”
