'Kick-Ass 2' Launches With $1.3 Million

But 'The Butler' may challenge U's superhero actioner for weekend crown

Universal’s “Kick-Ass 2″ got off to an encouraging start Thursday night, earning $1.3 million as the teen actioner prepares to battle “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” at the late summer box office.

“Kick-Ass 2,” starring Chloe Moretz, Aaron Johnson and Jim Carrey, is poised to finish No. 1 with $20 million-plus. The original installment of “Kick-Ass” debuted to $19.8 million in 2010 and nearly $100 million worldwide.

This weekend’s other top release, The Weinstein Company’s “Butler,” is projected in the mid-to-high teens but could see an uptick in ticket sales depending on Oprah Winfrey’s fanbase.

Based on the true story of longtime White House butler Eugene Allen, “The Butler” cost about the same to produce as “Kick-Ass 2″ in the $28 million ballpark.

Also bowing wide this weekend, Open Road’s Steve Jobs biopic “Jobs” and Relativity Media’s thriller “Paranoia.” Both films should debut to mid seven-figures.
