Shooting starts Nov. 4 in North Carolina

Demarest Films will finance and produce Kevin Smith’s horror film “Tusk,” starring Justin Long and Michael Park with shooting starting Nov. 4 in Charlotte, N.C.

Smith will direct from his own script, which evolved from Episode 259 of his Smodcast podcast with Scott Mosier, following a podcaster who sets out to interview an eccentric seafarer, only to find himself a plaything in the gruesome plot of a deranged killer.

Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson will produce alongside Shannon McIntosh for Smith’s Smodcast Pictures banner. Demarest’s David Greathouse and Jennifer Schwalbach are exec producers.

“I can’t thank the good folks at Demarest enough for wading into weird waters with us,” said Smith.

Demarest projects include Anton Corbijn’s “A Most Wanted Man,” starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Daniel Bruhl, and Robin Wright; Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills,” opening Friday; Max Nichols’ romcom “Two Night Stand”; and Mike Flanagan’s “Somnia,” shooting this winter.

Smodcast Pictures produced “Red State” and the animated “Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie.”
