Karlovy Vary Fest to Fete John Travolta

'Killing Season' to world preem at Czech film fest

The Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the leading sprocket opera in Central and Eastern Europe, will fete John Travolta with its Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema. The fest will world preem Travolta’s latest pic, “Killing Season,” at a Gala Screening.

Travolta stars alongside Robert De Niro as two Bosnian War veterans in “Killing Season,” which is a tense action drama directed by Mark Steven Johnson (“Ghost Rider”). It is produced by Millennium Films and Nu Image is handling worldwide.

Travolta will attend the fest to accept the award.

Jiri Bartoska, fest prexy, said: “John Travolta is an artist of incredible versatile talent. Aside from extraordinary popularity, he has gained particular recognition within the industry’s professional circles. His contribution to world cinema is unquestionable.”

Karlovy Vary also announced Tuesday that French thesp Audrey Tautou will join Michel Gondry to present his latest film, “Mood Indigo,” which opens the event and in which she stars.

Other guests at the fest will include American filmmaker Cary Fukunaga (“Sin Nombre,” “Jane Eyre”), Italo helmer Paolo Sorrentino (“Il Divo,” “This Must Be the Place”), British actor Julian Sands and Italian actress-director Valeria Golino (“Rainman,” “A Tale of Love”).

Fukunaga will present his latest project, “Sleepwalking in the Rift,” which is the product of a collaboration with fashion label Maiyet. The helmer has reworked the improvisational piece into a visceral audio-visual installation.

Sorrentino will introduce his latest film, “The Great Beauty,” which plays in the Horizons section of the festival.

Sands will present the live perf “A Celebration of Harold Pinter,” which was directed by John Malkovich and features a mix of anecdotes and quotes from correspondence between Sands and the dramatist.

Golino will introduce “Miele,” which is her debut feature as director.

Steven Soderberg’s “Behind the Candelabra” will close the fest, which runs June 28-July 6.
