Elizabeth Fowler, Claudia Bluemhuber to develop movie based on book 'Impossible Odds'

Producers Elizabeth Fowler (“Devil’s Knot”) and Claudia Bluemhuber (“The Host”) are developing a movie based on last year’s rescue of Jessica Buchanan in Somalia.

Fowler and Bluemhuber have acquired the move rights to the book “Impossible Odds: The Kidnapping of Jessica Buchanan and her Dramatic Rescue by SEAL Team Six,” written by Buchanan, her husband Erik Landemalm and Anthony Flacco. The tome was published last month by Atria Books.

The producers have also acquired the life rights of Buchanan and Landemalm.

Fowler and Bluemhuber will produce with Sharlene Martin of  Martin Literary & Media Management.  Flacco, the author of eight books and a Disney Fellowship Winner, will write the screenplay.

Buchanan and Landemalm were performing humanitarian aid work in Eastern Africa when she and Danish citizen Poul Hagen Thisted were  kidnapped in October 2011 by a band of Somalia land pirates. Buchanan fought to stay alive using deception and imagination, and her husband worked with the FBI and U.S. military to keep the pirates negotiating.

With Buchanan’s health declining, a Navy SEAL Team attacked the the pirates’ compound and killed all nine of them, rescuing Buchanan and Thisted.

The deal was negotiated by Sharlene Martin with Tom Greenberg and Laurie Megery of Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka,  Finkelstein and Lezcano.
