Jennifer Lawrence is set to star in Universal’s adaptation of “East of Eden,” with Gary Ross on board to direct.

Brian Grazer will produce for Imagine Entertainment and Anna Culp will serve as executive producer.

Based on the John Steinbeck novel, the story revolves around a father and two sons in California’s Salinas Valley, and the dark secrets about their mother, whom they thought dead. The book was originally adapted by director Elia Kazan, and the classic film starred James Dean.

Lawrence will play at an earlier time in her life the role of the mother who was played by Jo Van Fleet in the 1955 version. Some may wonder why the studio would cast the role that isn’t exactly seen as the most important but U may have heard of Lawrence’s interest in working again with Ross and did not want to miss out on the opportunity given her busy schedule.

The CAA-repped Lawrence can be seen next in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Ross is repped by CAA.

Deadline Hollywood broke the news.

Sounds like a cool project. Way to go, Jen!

  4. Joe Maltby says:

Is Jennifer going to play Abra in the movie? Played by Julie Harris in the original movie.

  6. machavilli says:

Sad, pathetic…it seems like everybody wants to remake everything under the sun…..this is degrading….

  7. Rob says:

East of Eden was a pet project of Kristen Stewart’s, but she could never raise the funding for it, even though she’s been trying since 2008.

Since her cheating with her married director scandal, it looks like no studio wants to invest in her, and Jennifer is walking off with all the plum roles. How the mighty have fallen. Jen will be sensational, she’s the best actress of her generation.

  8. Amy Pond in the TARDIS says:

Also, Kazan’s film isn’t true to the book. I’m hoping this new version is; Jennifer Lawrence as Kate? Kate’s a nasty piece of work; I’m looking forward to this!

  9. O says:

How’s that? How can Lawrence play the mother? She is 23 years old. It would be illegal for her to have kids as old as James Dean was in the film. Why isn’t anyone using the word remake. That’s what this is. Universal is remaking East of Eden.

  10. Joyce says:

Um, in Kazan’s film Julie Harris played the young girl, who was friends with the two brothers. Jo Van Fleet played the boys’ mother.

    • Darin says:

yeah, but they want her to play the mother. that’s the wtf for me. Look, I love Lawrence but what about the actresses in their early 30s/40s.

      • Celia says:

Maybe you should read the article. It says Lawrence will play the mother at an earlier time in her life aka when she was young. The book covers several decades, the first part is about Cathy and Adam when they are young and the latter part is about their children.
