Acting awards go to Hiroshi Abe, Kirin Kiki

TOKYO

“The Kirishima Thing,” a drama about the fall-out when a star high-school volleyball player inexplicably quits the team, won the film prize at the 36th awards from the Japan Academy in Tokyo on Friday.

The pic’s helmer Daihachi Yoshida also scooped the director award, while Mototaka Kusakabe received the editing prize for his work on the pic.

The actor award went to Hiroshi Abe for his turn as a time-traveling Roman bath architect in the hit period fantasy “Thermae Romae,” while the actress prize was given to veteran Kirin Kiki for her perf as the dementia-afflicted mom in Masato Harada’s drama “Chronicle of My Mother.”

Kenji Uchida’s original script for the identity-switch dramedy “Key of Life,” which he also helmed, walked off with the screenplay prize, while Mamoru Hosoda’s “Wolf Children,” a toon about a single mom raising two half-wolf, half-human children, won the animation award.

Finally, the foreign film prize went to Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s drama “The Intouchables,” which also won the Grand Prize at last year’s Tokyo Film Festival, and was the biggest hit of the all non-Hollywood foreign pics last year.

The awards are given in 16 categories with five nominees each.
