Universal Turning 1970s Series ‘It Takes a Thief’ into Film (EXCLUSIVE)

It Takes a Thief Movie

Universal is looking to get the gears moving on a feature adaptation of “It Takes a Thief,” bringing on Greg Russo to pen the script.

Inspired by the 1970s TV show created by Roland Kibbee and starring Robert Wagner, the story follows a young CIA analyst who recruits a brilliant thief, who has managed to evade the CIA to work for him. An earlier draft was written by Joe Gazzam.

John Davis is producing through his Davis Entertainment banner as is Joseph Singer. Derek Dauchy will oversee for Davis, with Scott Bernstein overseeing it for Universal.

Russo has been on a hot streak of late, and “It Takes a Thief” would be the latest in a recent string of projects to bolster his resume. He recently penned the script “Heatseekers” for Paramount, which Michael Bay and Chris Morgan are producing, and has also sold a handful of specs and pitches, including “Down” to Relativity and “Black Ice” to Alloy. He is also writing “Continuum” for Relativity, with Atlas and Benderspink producing.

Russo is repped by ICM Partners, Madhouse Entertainment and and attorney Larry Kopeikin.

per last post, some shows were meant to be on 5 years or so, & the networks and/or “suits” either didn’t appreciate the concept of the show or just “didn’t get it” and would eventually “tinker” with or “tweak” it too much like “It Takes A Thief” ( or Star Trek)…Lets hope the film version is just was cool as the original ABC network series. That was a really cool show…..(“the same way, like Robert Wagner or Cary Grant”)

If and when “It Takes a Thief” gets off the ground, Michael (?) Weatherly from NCIS would be perfect,
either way its got to be somebody who is really sharp and cool, but not working hard at it, who would portray the lead part part the say way, similar to Robert Wagner or Cary Grant…

  3. Kelly says:

Kind of sad that this was filmed in the 1960s… And Universal has no new ideas since then….

  4. harry georgatos says:

get brian de palma to kickstart a possible franchise similar to what he did with mission:impossible

  5. Lea DiCenso says:

Loved the original series and wwatching it now on Antenna TV. Would be great to have a cameo role for Robert Wagner!

  6. Jeff Kaye says:

Loved this show starting in 1968, with Robert Wagner as the suave thief Alexander Mundy. Show kicked up a class notch when Fred Astaire was brought on board as his father who taught him everything he knows.

  7. Joe Byrne says:

    Good Idea..Love the Show

  8. sue s says:

    2 words – Robert Pattinson!

  9. Jim says:

$5 says Rob Lowe will get the role of Alexander Mundy so he mimick more “R. J.” imitations.
