First two films have already grossed over $245 million
Focus Features has dated “Insidious 3” for April 3, 2015 — even though the micro-budget scarer has not started filming.
The first two films, starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, have performed impressively, together grossing close to $250 million worldwide. “Insidious 3” will open against TWC-Dimension’s sci-fier “Passengers,” starring Keanu Reeves and Rachel McAdams.
Entertainment One, FilmDistrict and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions announced in September that they were developing the third chapter of the micro-budgeted scare franchise after a strong opening for “Insidious: Chapter 2.” FilmDistrict’s operations were merged into Focus in October.
The first two films also starred Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey and were directed by James Wan. It’s not clear if Wan — currently shooting the seventh “Fast and Furious” — will return for the third installment. Leigh Whannell, who worked on the first two scripts, is on board to return to write the third version of the franchise.
Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Prods., which produced both “Insidious” films, is also on board to produce the third installment along with Oren Peli. Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Peter Schlessel, Lia Buman and Xavier Marchand are exec producing.
