India’s fest faves hit L.A.

'Gangs' to open and 'Midnight's Children' to close IFFLA

Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur” will open the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and Deepa Mehta’s “Midnight’s Children,” will feature as the closing night film.

Both filmmakers will attend to present their films at the 11th edition running April 9-14 at ArcLight Hollywood.

“Gangs,” which played in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight last year will be joined by other Cannes entries including Ashim Ahluwalia’s “Miss Lovely” and Vasan Bala’s “Peddlers.”

Other highlights include Mira Nair’s Venice player “The Reluctant Fundamentalist,” which will be a centerpiece of the festival. Cricket doc “Beyond all Boundaries” will make its world preem among 35 titles in the lineup.

Popular segment Bollywood by Night returns with two pics that pay tribute to Amitabh Bachchan: “Kabhi kabhie” and “Silsila” as well as Yash Chopra’s “Chandni.”

“Our slate of films this year showcases path-breaking works of emerging and established Indian filmmakers that are making waves at top-tier film festivals around the world,” said fest found Christina Marouda. “This is a rare opportunity for Los Angeles audiences to not only catch films that are very hard to find outside the film-festival circuit, but also to engage with these talented filmmakers who are coming to Los Angeles to present their films.”
