Festival hails first time directors
HONG KONG — Singapore drama “Ilo Ilo” and Turkish historical drama “The Long Way Home” shared the New Talent Award presented Tuesday at the close of the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival.
The festival, in its tenth edition screened a total of 60 films and wrapped last night with a screening of Bong Joon Ho’s “Snowpiercer.”
“Ilo Ilo,” directed by Anthony Chen, is a story of a Filipino maid and her rocky relationship with her Singaporean host family during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. “Long Way Home”, by Alphan Eseli follows the dangerous trek by a group of soldiers on their way back from the WWI battlefields.
For Chen, the HK award adds to a growing haul of silverware that began with the Camera d’Or in Cannes in May.
