IFC Films nabs ‘Crystal Fairy’

No distrubution plan disclosed for Michael Cera pic

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Sebastían Silva’s “Crystal Fairy,” the Chile-based psychadelic drug drama starring Michael Cera that premiered at Sundance.

Distrib plans a day-and-date release in the second half of 2013.

“Fairy,” which Silva directed from his own script, also stars Gaby Hoffmann, Juan Andres Silva, Jose Miguel Silva and Agustin Silva. Producers are Juan de Dios Larrain and Pablo Larrain.

Cera plays a boorish American traveling in Chile who plans a road trip to ingest a legendary hallucinogenic cactus. Along the way he invites a free-spirited young woman to join them, though their opposite personalities cause strife. Pic won best director in the world cinema section.

“‘Crystal Fairy’ charmed our entire company as one of the most original and charming films of the festival,” said Sundance Selects/IFC Films prexy Jonathan Sehring.

Variety’s mixed review of “Crystal Fairy” praised engaging perfs by Cera and Hoffmann, saying they “exclusively elevate a pic that promotes the pleasures of altered consciousness, but proves insufficiently psychedelic itself.”

IFC Films had a busy Sundance, having already grabbed rights to Michael Winterbottom’s “The Look of Love” and David Lowery’s feature debut “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.” Sister label Sundance Selects acquired rights to competish docs “The Summit” and “Dirty Wars.”

Deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco for Sundance Selects/IFC Films; and UTA on behalf of the filmmakers.
