Ian McKellen, Adam Driver Among Thesps Set for Palm Springs Short Film Fest Titles

Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver are among thesps appearing in shorts at the 2013 Palm Springs International ShortFest and Short Film Market. The fest, now in its 19th year, will showcase 330 films including 70 world premieres, 55 North American premieres and 14 U.S. premieres from June 18 to 24 at Camelot Theaters in Palm Springs.

Television stars such as Jason Ritter in “Boats Against the Current” as well as film thesps including Christopher Lloyd in the world premiere of “The Coin” are among the actors whose shorts will be showcased. Other entries include Lauren Ambrose and Driver in “The River,” Brooke Shields and Mireille Enos in “Wild Horses” and Elle Fanning in “Likeness.”

A significant U.K. presence includes Alan Rickman in “Dust” (pictured); Ian McKellen in the world premiere of “The Egg Trick”; and Christopher Eccleston and Felicity Jones in the world premiere of “Emily.” Blanchett provides the voice for “A Cautionary Tale.”

A number of countries have shorts at the fest for the first time.

“We are so delighted to present new works at ShortFest from so many unique new countries this year, especially the African countries of Burundi, Mali and Burkina Faso,” said Kathleen McInnis, ShortFest Film Curator.

Selected shorts are organized into programs covering an array of genres – including action, comedies, dramas, horror stories, thrillers and mysteries– and themes such as animals, art, communication, crime, dreams, family, taboos, love, memories, siblings, conflicts, travel, work, GLBT  and kids’ shorts.

Another component of the festival is the ShortFest Online Film Festival, where viewers will vote for 11 films that will play on a special section of the fest’s website. Among the selection are “The Mrs” directed by Matt Smukler, “Bad Cars” directed by Anthony Deptula and “Shelved,” directed by James Cunningham. Online voting will continue though June 24 and some of the pics will continue to play online for two months after the end of the festival.

One of North America’s largest short film fests and markets, the Palm Springs event is designated by AMPAS as an award-qualifying festival, and accredited by the International Short Film Conference.
