The China outing joins the list of virtually day-and-date releases in more than 50 territories around the world.
China operates a quota system that limits to 34 the number of revenue sharing films that can be imported and distributed in the country each year. Major Hollywood studios typically enjoy the majority of these slots, though independents and non-U.S. films have a greater chance since last year’s expansion of the import gateway.
“The release of the first ‘Hunger Games’ film in China established a strong fan base on which ‘Catching Fire’ is positioned to build,” said Wendy Reeds, Executive VP of Content Sales & Distribution for Celestial Tiger Entertainment (CTE), Lionsgate’s representative in the region.
Lionsgate has recently scored at the Chinese box office with the theatrical releases of “Now You See Me,” and “The Impossible.”
