'Matrix' star lends weight to Oz release of Indian art house title
The film is by Anand Gandhi, regarded as one of the most talented directors to emerge from India in recent years. Told as three connected stories, the film examines the trade in human body parts and asks difficult questions about the recipients as well as the donors.
Weaving now gets above the title credit and is now lending his promotional efforts to the Nov. 7 release by Mindblowing Films, a distributor better known for handling a steady stream of mainstream Bollywood movies.
Similar tactics were adopted by investor and distributor UTV in India, where the film was presented by Kiran Rao, indie film-maker and wife of superstar Aamir Khan.
“It is great to have Hugo on board,” Gandhi told Variety. “People really began to take notice when Kiran came along. It enabled us to more than double the number of screens we could book for release.”
Weaving (“Matrix”, “Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit”) and Gandhi met at June’s Sydney Film Festival and found common ground on matters of cinema and fine art.
