Line up includes 'Unbelievers,' 'Caucus'
TORONTOGus Holwerda’s “The Unbelievers,” following scientists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss’ crusade to trumpet the importance of science, and A.J. Schnack’s “Caucus,” a behind-the-scenes look at Republican hopefuls at the 2012 Iowa caucus, will world preem at the Hot Docs festival. Director of programming Charlotte Cook unveiled 28 features in the Special Presentations program of Toronto’s international documentary fest, mart and confab. Toronto helmer Barry Avrich’s “Prepare for the Worst,” a biodoc on comedian David Steinberg, will also world preem at Hot Docs, which runs April 25 to May 5. U.S. titles receiving international preems include Martha Shane and Lana Wilson’s “After Tiller,” Freida Mock’s “Anita,” Dawn Porter’s “Gideon’s Army,” Jason Osder’s “Let the Fire Burn,” Greg Camalier’s “Muscle Shoals,” and Jeff Reichert and Farihah Zaman’s “Remote Area Medical.” Recent award-winners from the fest circuit include Sundance docs “Blood Brother,” “Pussy Riot — A Punk Prayer,” “The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear” and “Who Is Dayani Cristal?” plus IDFA opener “Wrong Time Wrong Place.” Fest is also presenting the 20th anniversary screening of D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus’ “The War Room,” with the filmmakers in attendance. On the confab side, Hot Docs will host official delegations of producers and broadcasters from China, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, the Nordic region, Poland, South Africa and the U.S., who will participate in Intl. Co-Production Day networking events on April 29. Two new industry programs were also announced for 2013: Hot Docs Deal Maker will put 50 work-in-progress projects in front of international players in one-on-one meets, while Distribution Rendezvous aims to help finished and rough-cut pics gather momentum through pre-arranged meets with distributors, agents and fest programmers. Hot Docs Forum, the international co-financing event and industry centerpiece, takes place May 1 and 2.
