'Iron Man 3,' 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' 'Pacific Rim' and 'Game of Thrones; take three nominations
Marvel’s Shane Black pic nabbed three nominations and Guillermo del Toro’s monster-vs-robots epic were both nominated for sound, visual effects and color grading, while J.J. Abrams’ Paramount tentpole was nommed for editing, visual effects and color grading.
“Game of Thrones” was nominated for three different episodes: “Valar Dohaeris” for visual effects, “The Climb” for sound and “Kissed by Fire” for color grading. “Breaking Bad,” “Dexter” and the “Banshee” pilot received two nominations apiece.
The HPA’s awards year ends in late summer, so releases from fall and winter 2012 vie with this year’s pictures. As a result, “Argo” collected nominations for editing and sound; the editing category is rounded out with “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Flight” and “Les Miserables.”
“The Hobbit” is nommed for visual effects, and Park Road Post received the Judges Award for creativity and innovation in post-production for the high-frame-rate stereoscopic “On Set to On Screen” workflow developed for “The Hobbit.”
Among companies, Weta Digital collected the most noms in visual effects, for “Man of Steel,” “Iron Man 3″ and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” while Company 3 racked up four of the five color grading noms in commercials and two of the five for features, both feature noms going to star colorist Stefan Sonnenfeld. Big Sky Editorial had four of the five nominations for commercials editing.
