The trailer looks awesome! I like the extra footage for sure, but how come no one mentions Evangeline Lily,?! I am also looking forward to seeing her character! It also looks as if Peter Jackson is back in complete creative control of the franchise, I always thought, he alone can bring to life. I think that in “An Unexpected Journey”, the visual, tonal and pacing features of the movie still presented an uneasy clash of styles, represented both by Guillermo Del Toro’s previous involvement as well as the re-instatement of Peter Jackson back in the director’s chair. I think the creative conflict of both directors was visible if one looked close enough to the movie.

As I watched all the trailers of the second installment in “The Hobbit” franchise, I see none of the hesitations and stumbles that were present in the first one. It appears as if with “The Desolation Of Smaug”, Peter Jackson is firmly back in the driver’s seat. Which to my mind is for the best.

While I do appreciate Guillermo Del Toro’s abilities as a director, his imagination and creativity, which were amply on display in excellent movies like “Pan’s Labyrinth”, I just felt that there was something off in his take on Tolkien’s world.

Peter Jackson is THE man to bring Tolkien’s Middle-earth to life. I cannot see anyone else doing it…so I am glad with what I am seeing in this trailer!
