‘Gravity’ Hits $200 Million Worldwide; October Sweep Next?

3D phenom could stay No. 1 throughout October

Gravity” crossed the $200 million mark on Monday as Warner Bros.’ 3D pic continues to reach new heights at the global box office.

Having already won back-to-back weekends domestically, “Gravity” took in an additional $6.2 million on Monday in the U.S. to bring its total to $128.5 million since Oct. 4.

Overseas, the Alfonso Cuaron pic has added $71.9 million.

Buoyed largely by 3D ticket sales, “Gravity” is one of the few movies to break out during the usually hauntingly slow month of October.

The Sandra Bullock-starrer should continue its winning streak this weekend for its third consecutive No. 1 domestically, barring a surprise victory from MGM’s “Carrie” remake or Sony holdover “Captain Phillips.” Sylvester Stallone’s “Escape Plan” is also opening.

Looking ahead, the only other major October releases are 20th Century Fox’s “The Counselor” and Paramount’s Jack-Ass spinoff “Bad Grandpa” on Oct. 25, so while the odds are slim, given the financial and cultural buzz around “Gravity,” an October sweep of four No. 1 weekends is not entirely out of the picture.

  1. David says:

I wouldn’t underestimate Carrie. The young audiences like their horror, plus the older will be interested in the remake for nostalgia’s sake. It’s got some great cachet with Julianne Moore and Kimberly Pierce involved.

  2. Dave Bortman says:

“Gravity” is very boring — difficult to sit through. Apparently the names of George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are big enough draws to sell tickets.

    • JP says:

Dave Bortman, I find it hard to believe you actually saw this movie. Or maybe you did, but because of envy you like to rain on parades??? People don’t pay extra money to see Clooney or Sandra Bullock in a movie. It has nothing to do with them. Many are paying extra money to see this movie twice or more and paying extra to see it in 3D or 3D IMAX. Something like 83% are paying to see it in 3D because of the beautiful visuals and effects. The plot is simple, true, but it is an edge-of-your-seat story beginning to end.

      • Honest Rob says:

        Troll lol lol lol
Gravity is HANDS DOWN – the BEST film i have ever seen.
and this from a guy who normally cannot stand Ms. Bullock.
She is fantastic in this and deserves an Oscar nod.

    • Jon says:

Dave Bortman, you have no soul, no sense of wonder, and no reading of the zeitgeist.

    • seren says:

If that’s the case, it would have dropped hard on its 2nd weekend. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of others who don’t agree with you.

    • Mom says:

It has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes so it must have done something right.
